Origin of Kashmir carpets

These rugs are woven in Kashmar, a small town in the province of Khorasan. Nomads have been weaving rugs in Kashmar for centuries, but due to its remoteness, their rugs are sold in the nearby town of Mashad.

Originally, the nomads of Kashmir wove these rugs to keep their homes warm during the extreme winters. Despite their utility, weavers took great pride in making rugs with intricate patterns and beautiful colors. The wool they used was of the highest quality and was often obtained from the sheep they had raised themselves. Thanks to their large numbers of sheep, they didn't have to compromise on quality when sourcing their wool from outside. Kashan rugs are usually made of short or medium-length wool hairs on a cotton base. Silk is rarely used.

Two distinguishing features of Kashmar rugs

Their large size and unique patterns are two of the most distinctive features of Kashmar rugs. This is an interesting feature as weavers made larger rugs to incorporate the pattern they had in mind.

The motifs worked into these rugs are not just random patterns in different colors. Rather, they are scenes that recreate stories of historical events and mystical legends. These stories are represented through symbolic patterns woven into the interior of the panels.

To incorporate their elaborate shops into their creations, weavers designed larger rug-sized rugs instead of the small zone rugs. The result was large, stunning rugs with the most beautiful patterns creatively incorporated into individual panels.

Motifs of Kashmar carpets: Motifs of gardens, flowers, vases and much more

Cashmere rugs come in a variety of motifs, all of which are different from each other. The garden motif is a common theme, but each weaver represented it differently. They created panels and each panel of the rug told a different garden story, e.g. eg, one panel may depict birds perched in a tree, while another shows a dog by a lake surrounded by flowers, and a third a deer in a forest.

Flowers, trees, animals, birds, vases, jars and medallion-like pots were common elements in Kashmir carpets.

Colors of Kashmar carpets: deep blue, cream and others.

The weavers used natural dyes extracted from local plants to color their creations. As a result, most of the colors used in these rugs are muted earth tones, which is a rather rare feature of Persian rugs. The wide variety of plants growing in the region allows weavers to choose from a variety of colors.

A deep dark blue is a predominant color used to create the background and borders of most of these rugs. Other common colors for cashmere rugs are shades of beige, cream, yellow, khaki, ivory, orange, green, blue and pink.

Typical patterns in cashmere carpets

The patterns created in cashmere rugs usually tell a story about a historical event. It is not uncommon to see images of ancient kings woven into the pattern.
