Yalameh Carpets
The town of Yalameh is just north of the city Isfahan in central Iran. Yalameh is known for its high-quality tribal rugs with geometric diamond patterns. Compared to other tribal rugs, the Yalameh is among the best.
The pile of Yalameh rugs is very fine, especially when compared to other tribal patterns, and is made of soft wool on a cotton ground. The pattern is distinctive, with large diamond shapes repeating in a straight line across the rug, often with geometric animal or human footprints scattered across the field. Similar to them Shiraz-rugs, these rugs can be perfectly combined with modern or minimalist furniture and give the living space a luxurious and warm look.
History
The Yalameh are a sub-tribe of the Lori people Iran. The Lori, also called "Lor", are the oldest known tribe in the country. Over the centuries, the Lori population spread from the central western region to the Persian Gulf of southwestern Iran. The Yalameh are mainly native to the northern part of central Iran.
Yalameh carpets have been known in the carpet market since the second quarter of the 24th century.
The designs are geometric and heavily influenced by Lori motifs. The motifs are all-over or medallion. The all-over pattern typically consists of square fans with palmettes or diamonds surrounded by hook motifs, which in turn are surrounded by tribal motifs. The medallion style features various diamond or hexagon shapes also bordered by hooks. The medallions are arranged in a field, sometimes surrounded by tribal motifs and floral heads. The main border design generally consists of alternating palmettes, leaves or multicolored tendrils. The carpets have a wool ground and a wool pile. The Turkish knot (symmetrical) is used. Yalameh's background and border colors are red, blue, ivory and brown. In addition, different shades of green, grey, gold and cinnamon are used for the design elements.
Sizes range from mats to rugs measuring twelve feet by nine feet. A small percentage of runners are made in a variety of lengths. The weavings are generally of good to very good quality.
Yalameh rugs were successfully marketed to western European consumers as the weavers were able to produce rugs in both tribal and standard European room sizes. Yalameh's nomadic design and fine wool contributed to its popularity.
